Crusher feed control
Closed-loop feed control using chamber level measurement and a variable speed drive (VSD) to maintain choke-fed operation and maximise crusher throughput.

Overview
A cone crusher delivers its rated throughput and most consistent product gradation when operated choke-fed, with the crushing chamber kept full. Variable feed rates cause the chamber to run partially empty, reducing throughput, increasing uneven liner wear and producing inconsistent product.
Crusher feed control continuously measures chamber level and modulates feeder speed to hold it at setpoint, maintaining choke-fed operation across changes in feed material and upstream conditions.
Typical applications
- Cone crushers supplied by belt, apron or vibrating feeders
- Circuits with manual or fixed-speed feed control
- Operations seeking higher throughput without capital investment in new crushing plant
Industries
The process in three steps
- 1
Measure
A non-contact level sensor continuously measures material level in the crushing chamber.
- 2
Control
A PLC compares the measured level against setpoint and calculates the required feed rate.
- 3
Actuate
A VSD adjusts feeder speed to hold the chamber at setpoint, with interlocks to protect the crusher and upstream equipment.
