Overview
Many sites continue to rely on PLC platforms that their manufacturers have moved to phase-out or discontinued status. As spares become scarce and platform expertise declines, a single hardware failure can result in an extended unplanned outage.
A planned migration transfers existing control functionality to a current, supported platform, with complete documentation, at a time that suits production rather than in response to a failure.
Typical applications
- Siemens S7-300 and S7-200 systems
- Allen-Bradley SLC 500, PLC-5 and MicroLogix systems
- Legacy operator interfaces (HMIs) that can no longer be replaced like for like
Industries
The process in three steps
- 1
Audit and document
The existing program is backed up and all inputs, outputs, interlocks and sequences are documented.
- 2
Convert and test
Control logic is converted to the new platform and tested against existing behaviour off-site.
- 3
Cutover
The new system is installed during a scheduled shutdown, with the existing system retained as a fallback until the new system is proven.
